Between the 14th and 15th of September 2023, FGV EBAPE promoted, in partnership with the Lemann Foundation Program at the Blavatnik School of Government, at the University of Oxford, the Health Meeting – Regionalize and strengthen the SUS, at the School's headquarters. This is the first event of the Lemann Foundation Program, based at the University of Oxford, held in Brazil.
The meeting was organized by FGV EBAPE researcher, Rafael Goldszmidt, and mediated by the associate professor of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, Emily Jones, as well as the associate professor of Public Policy and Director of the Lemann Foundation Program, Anna Petherick , and team. Several authorities from the public health sector in Brazil were present.
The aim of the meeting was to create a space for dialogue and exchange of experiences between civil society, researchers and public health leaders to think about initiatives to strengthen and regionalize the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). The programming was conducted through the Lemann Foundation Program, an independent research program supported by the Lemann Foundation.
During the event, national experiences and speeches by Brazilian experts on the topic of public health were presented. The main obstacles to strengthening the Sistema Público de Saúde (SUS) through regionalization were published and possible solutions were collectively thought of based on the experience of public authorities on the topic.
For FGV EBAPE professor and organizer of the meeting, Rafael Goldszmidt, the holding of the event by FGV EBAPE reinforces links with international programs committed to social impact and enables meetings between public servants, elected officials and researchers in the area who were present for debate such relevant points about Brazil in Brazil.
The event featured a message from the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, praising the performance of the National Council of Health Secretaries (CONASS) during the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and the country's history in the area of public health.
The Lemann Foundation Program is a comparative research program based at the Blavatnik School of Government, at the University of Oxford, with an emphasis on Brazil, which generates and disseminates knowledge to improve the public sector and its associated institutions.
