The article “The benefits of nonprofit reputation: Government funding, nonprofit performance, and nonprofit reputational gains” from the PhD dissertation of FGV EBAPE Professor and alumna Aline Menezes, co-authored with Professor Alketa Peci, was published in the Public Administration Review (PAR), a leading journal in the field of public administration research, theory, and practice for over 70 years.
The study evaluated the role of reputation in partnerships between government and nonprofit organizations. The research examined 675 collaborations between the Brazilian Ministry of Health and 60 nonprofit hospitals from 2012 to 2019
According to Aline Menezes, “previous research on collaborative governance has focused on contractual and relational conditions to explain the performance of partnerships between government and nonprofit organizations. However, the potential causal factors that make partnerships more capable (or not) of achieving good performance compared to traditional arrangements is an area that needs more research. We bring the resource-based view (RBV) from management literature closer to public administration research to investigate intangible resources and performance in causal structure analysis..
We employed econometric models for panel data to examine 675 collaborations between MS [Brazilian Ministry of Health] and 60 nonprofit hospitals from 2012 to 2019. The results suggest that nonprofit hospitals with strong reputations receive more government funding, hire more staff and reach higher production levels. Our research also suggests a virtuous cycle: better performance triggers reputational gains in official rankings. As an implication for practice, public managers who initiate partnerships between government and nonprofit organizations can consider reputational rankings for decision-making processes.”
The Public Administration Review (PAR) is a bimonthly professional journal that has been the leading journal in the field of public administration research, theory, and practice for 75 years. It is published by the American Society for Public Administration, TM/SM, and is the only journal in public administration serving academics and practitioners interested in the public sector and public sector management.
