Professor Renzio is the newest researcher and senior associate professor at FGV EBAPE. He holds a PhD in International Relations from Oxford University, a Master’s in International Development from the London School of Economics, and a BA in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan (Italy). In addition to teaching at FGV EBAPE, he is a visiting professor at the LSE and a consultant to the World Bank on public finance issues.
Passionate about the city of Rio de Janeiro, Paolo came to Brazil for the first time when he was in college for an exchange program at FGV. “A lot of Brazilian culture enchanted me at the time, like the music of João Gilberto and the books of Jorge Amado. But the definitive visit to the city happened much later, and it was due to my wife, who is from Rio de Janeiro,” he declares.
In addition to lecturing on the courses Good Governance and Public Transparency of the Professional Master’s in Public Administration and Green Finance of the Master in Management, Professor Paolo de Renzio is designing a new course that discusses themes that permeate public finance and fiscal policies in public debates in Brazil and the world. This includes how to tackle climate change and how to promote equity and innovation through the use of public resources.
The professor highlights the importance of establishing a clear link between research and the real world, thinking about research, and asking questions that are relevant to answering the real problems of the societies in which we live. At the same time, it is important not to sacrifice academic rigor to arrive at answers that help in the practice of public policies and contribute to improving collective scientific knowledge.
For Professor Renzio, “coming to FGV EBAPE was perfect for my interests as a researcher in public policy. Also, the school is in Rio de Janeiro! I like the beach, waterfalls, trails, samba, and choro [music]. I think it is a privilege to live in a city with so many natural and cultural attractions.”
